  • New Outlast glitch skips almost the entire game

Kinda crazy the PS4'ers found this out

PS4 runner Finath discovered the glitch and video can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=1428821840701191

    Breakdown

For the textually impaired: http://www.twitch.tv/saintconnor/c/4152591 (video breakdown)

The short is you basically go from chapter 1 to the final chapter. For reference, this is Outlast's version of OoT wrong warp to Gannon.

The long: This is achieved by a combination of tricks. You use a door clip to exit a room that would otherwise be locked. Because of this, you gain access to a bathroom that you previously couldn't. Using a new door peeking method, you can pin yourself between the stall door and the wall, causing the collision detection to force you up, placing you on top of the wall and/or stall door. From there its a series of maneuvers to get lined up and yolo jump toward the 2nd floor elevator. Then its a series of pause buffers and jumps to a save point below the "Return to Admin block" vent. Then business as usual until the end.

It's worth noting that PS4 version loads differently than the PC version and pause buffering is more efficient/quicker on the PS4 side of things. The PC version, on the other hand, can transition seamlessly between chapters whereas the PS4 version has to deal with a black "loading screen" for transitions. Despite the differences, both platforms are very close time wise and we may not know for a while which is the more optimal.

To put this into perspective, here is Albinohat's 31:39 PC WR and Pwntimex's 32:45 PS4 Run (He actually has/had the PS4 WR of 32:20, but I don't have the VOD)

Compare those time with Pwntimex's current 13:24 WR using the new glitch (no video atm).

    Ridiculous.

I also want to use this post as an opportunity to bring Outlast to light. It's one of the more competitive games that's probably been off most people's radar. PC guys like myself, obviously had a headstart, but the PS4 crew wasted no time in catching up and improved routes further.

    So shoutouts to:

Pwntimex also made a site for tracking the PS4 leaderboard: http://outlastspeedruns.weebly.com/

And a special shoutout to a long time friend who has taken a special interest in the Outlast community and speedrunning as a whole, Kashtpr, who took the time to make an awesome wiki with a lot of good general info, WR tracking, and links to both the PS4 and PC SDA threads.

UPDATE EDIT - There is already a chapter skip 2.0...found, yet again, by Finath.

    Welp. ¯\ _(ツ) _/¯

UPDATE EDIT 2 - And no sooner of me posting the first update, Oram77 gets the WR of 11:27

He's streaming more attempts atm: http://www.twitch.tv/oram77

LAST UPDATE - Oram hit sub 11 with 10:59 (VOD to come later), I hit 10:36 on PC (http://www.twitch.tv/saintconnor/c/4157743)
