It's really hard to pick a top 3 for me... but my list goes:
1. Clannad (including After Story)
2. Steins Gate
3. Guilty Crown

I tried to pick the 3 for me that gave me the most wild ride of story, animation, character development, music, and emotion.

Surprisingly there are a lot of great anime's's's's out there, but I think my favorite would have to be...
1. FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
2. Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou
3. Great Teacher Onizuka or commonly known as GTO

Although... I do fanboy over the naruto manga in an over the top kind of way >.>

Well, I can't really make a top 3 but if there had to be one they would be:

1 - Cowboy Bebop (that directing + yoko kanno OST)
2 - Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan
3 - BECK

I will add the 4th and 5th as well from an on-the-spot list:

4 - Samurai Champloo
5 - Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2

I have something that is pretty useful to do which is a myanimelist. Mine is www.myanimelist.net/profile/hermit-sama, you can check all the animes I have seen up until 2 years ago (or something like that, haven't updated it for a while) and the manga I've read.

Actually, I will hijack the thread and post my top 5 of manga as well:

1 - One Piece (Oda is a God, best manga ever)
2 - Rurouni Kenshin
3 - Vagabond
4 - The Breaker (it's a manhwa, but whatever)
5 - Blade of the Immortal

I think we need to be honest with ourselves and just pay homage to all Jappy people with **cked up minds that give us all of these enticing stories we've all come to love and with some of us worship >.>

In all reality there are a sh*t ton of great animeseses out there and although we might think we could come up with our "Top 3" choices but in reality we all know that we more or less have a top 40+.

Choosing a top 3 just isn't fair haha
