Summer Games Done Quick has come and gone for another year, but it will surely leave behind some fantastic talking points for the speedrunning community! Each year, the SpeedDemosArchive produces, with the help of Speed Runs Live, produces two high quality, high speed, and high donation fund raising events for Doctors without Borders, and this year, SGDQ has been no different. With two great milestones, and a massive achievement below its belt, SGDQ has become a talking point on everyone’s lips!
The first massive milestone, of course, is the total money raised at this year’s event! SGDQ managed to break their $250,000 target before the end of their main stream, and raising a total of $255,235.62 by the end of the bonus stream (which contained speedruns of all sorts of things, even including Rubik’s Cubes…) thus making it one of, if not, the most successful GDQ marathon ever, and possibly the most successful video game marathon in history.
The second milestone is the overall total. Since the start of GDQ, 3 years ago, SpeedRunsLive and SpeedDemosArchive have managed to raise over $1 million for Doctors Without Borders, which is nothing short of an impressive feat. Raising over $330,000 a year for 3 years straight is just so far beyond the call of duty, and with numbers like that, it brings so much help to Doctors Without Borders, and to thousands of people living in impoverished countries.
However in my opinion, my favourite part of the entire stream was the GTA Vice City run by my fellow countryman, AdamAK. Not because of the run, or any of the donation incentives, but the fact that during his GTA Vice City run, they managed to raise over $25,000 just so top streamer Cosmo would do a run of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. To put this in perspective, in the space of 2 hours, they raised more money than David Beckham makes per day. Considering he is one of the most iconic Footballers in history, that’s saying something.
But one of the biggest achievements was during the the Super Mario 64 runs, where SM64 overtook League of Legends as the most viewed game on Twitch (at the time), something which is only ever done by top tier events in the eSports industry (and even then it’s rare, unless it’s the WCS Korea or Season Finals)
And now, onto our weekly split, known as the new World Records section, where I update you on all of the World Records achieved in the past 7 days! Firstly, LzH’s own CarNage64 again beat his Final Fantasy VII No Slots time, with a run of 8:04:21! Next up, a game that I have close to my heart, Ratchet and Clank received a new NewGame+ Any% record of 38:46! Thirdly, a new WR straight from SGDQ, with PilotWings64, run by Graviton29 in 33:31.6, improving by almost 1 minute on the previous time! Joshimuz also managed to crush the WR for Blur, with a run of 4:21:04. Keeping on track with the Racing games, and the SGDQ Hype, TouFool31 managed to set a WR for Diddy Kong Racing, with a time of 50:49.8. nedeahS managed to set a new OoT WR, with the All Dungeons WR of 1:40:57.86! An OoT WR is a very rare occurrence these days, so that’s definitely hype! And lastly, Fatzke beats the GTA: Vice City Any% WR with a time of 1:32:33.94
But that’s it from me this week. Join me next week, where we’ll be talking about things such as “How does one become a speedrunner?” also chatting about the latest and greatest in the world of World Records, and possibly a little surprise I have tucked up my sleeve. All this, and more, next week, on The Green Split!
And if you’re wondering, I can’t help it; here are my splits for this week.

And remember, an apple a day keeps the bad RNG away! Stay Green, folks!
